United States Virgin
Islands
Slaves in St.
Thomas (excerpt taken from St. Thomas This Week):
"St. Thomas, unlike the islands of St. Croix and St. John, was not an
important agricultural economy. Commerce was what St. Thomas was about
and because of that there was not the need for the same vast number of
field slaves required on other islands. Instead, many slaves were
craftsmen or worked on the docks and were in a better position to obtain
their freedom. Known as free-coloreds, their number was large enough
that the area known as Savan, in back of the Main Street Market Place,
was established as a place for them to live. Houses were often one-story
frame buildings, called long-rows, a room or two for each family with a
common yard for coal pot cooking and bathroom facilities."
