CENSUS

1917 Census Finds
(Note: The 1917 Census taken of the Danish West Indies transfer to the USA is considered the equivalent of the 1920 Federal US Census.  It was performed to establish a count of the population at the time of the transfer.  There are sections missing from this census!)

Setout Zengue (Pierre "Peter" Zingue)
"Setout" (a misspelling of his nickname "C'est Tous")  is recorded as living at #50 Contant Estate.  This census record lists C'est Tous as 58 years old.  His married-in-common wife was Beatrice Lavenge (Lavergne) who was a 35-year-old mulatto woman (born about 1884), and three "sons" - Irvin Johnson 12, Alvin Mills 8 and Joseph Eldred 5.  Beatrice was a laundress and Peter was a butcher.

*Note: This might be the mother of the Pierre Zingue's son Cyril Martin Zingue born in 1918.  The other boys living in the house are not the "sons" of Pierre Zingue - they are the children of Beatrice Lavergne.

Olympia Zingue
Olympia was recorded as 14 years old, living with Eleanor Hassel, a 59-year-old mulatto woman and her daughter Altagracia Hassel who was 32 and also a mulatto, working as a dressmaker in their home in Anna's Fancy Estate.  Olympia Zingue was recorded as a boarder and servant in that house.  Olympia was born in 1903 so she would have been 14 at the time.

Note: Anna's Fancy is relatively close to Contant, where her father was living at the time.  Record of Olympia Zingue can also be found online at the RootsWeb.com Social Security Death Index site - search term: Olympia Zean.

1930 Census Finds

Melita Zingue (my great grandmother)

In the 1930 census, I have found my great grandmother Melita Zingue living with my great grandfather Lionel Vialet at Queens Quarter,  District 23, Commandant Gade O. V., St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on 14 April 1930.

Lionel Vialet is the head of this household. He was a Negro male, age 24, born in St. Thomas (both parents born in St. Thomas).  He was a barber in his own barbershop.  Lionel was recorded as married-in-common to Melita Zingue.  Melita was a Negro female, age 24 and born in St. Thomas (father born in St. Barts, mother born in Guadeloupe). Also listed in the household are two of their daughters.

Note: Melita was raised by a Catholic teacher, Miss Victoria Renee.  Melita died in 1960, after suffering from a stroke, according to her death certificate.  Roman Catholic Church Register #38 (microfilm #2P-3097) gives details about her death and where she received her sacraments.  She is buried in the Western Cemetery 1, St. Thomas.  Melita had nine children

Olympia Zean

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, on 19 April 1930, Olympia Zingue was recorded as living with her spouse Arthur Abel at Frederiksted, District 6, Hospital Street, 19 April 1930 (family no. 367).

Arthur Abel was the head of the household.  He was a Negro male, age 28, born in St. Croix (father and mother both born in St. Croix).  He was a carpenter in his own shop, and listed as married-in-common to "Olimipa Zinque".

Olympia was a Negro female, age 26, born in St. Thomas (father born in St. Barts and mother born in St. Martin).

Also listed in the household were:

1. Leola Abel, daughter of Arthur and Olympia.  Leola was a Negro female, 3 months old.  She was born in St. Croix (father born St. Croix, mother born St. Thomas)

2. Christiphina W. Wren.  She is the mother of the head of household (Arthur Abel), a Negro female, age 60 and single.  She was born in St. Croix (her father and mother both born in St. Croix).

Arthur and Olympia had two daughters, Leola and Almeade.  Both are deceased.

Alexandrisa Zinc

Ann Euphrasy was the twin of my great great grandfather, Pierre "Peter" Zingue. While in St. Barts, Euphrasy had a daughter by a man named Joseph Alexis Danet.  Their daughter was Marie-Alexandrine Zingue (Zengue).

Marie became known as "Myotte a Cong," and lived in French Town on St. Thomas.  She was a homemaker.  Myotte married Louis-Philippe Leopold Greaux "Cong" in May 1930. Leopold died in 1974.

In the 1930 USVI census (St. Thomas), I have found an "Alexandrisa Zinc," a boarder in the home of Husdane Doussett.  Alexandrisa was 33, mulatto, single and both her parents were born in St. Barts.  She spoke French, was an Alien and immigrated in either 1924 or 1929 (illegible). Are "Alexandrisa" and "Marie-Alexandrine" the same person? I don't know.
